Here are the details of the Practical Skills session in Moab. The general meeting place will always be at Rotary Park, which is on the road to the Slickrock bike trail, on the south side of the road. We will have an information board there and we should be there most of the day. Dinner will be there on Saturday night.
Driving to Moab: Moab is a 4 hour drive from Salt Lake City through scenic Price Canyon and along the Wasatch front. We will provide directions to Moab during your first week of didactics in Salt Lake City. Carpooling can be arranged during the week prior to the Moab.
Staying in Moab: April 16 and 17 might be cool, so pack accordingly. We have reserved Goose Island A and B campsite for both Friday and Saturday nights. It is only 1.4 miles up river from Hwy 191. It will take about 5 - 10 minutes to get there from downtown Moab. It can accomodate everyone in the course. It is very close to Negro Bill Canyon. There are toilets there. It is an improved with toilets and shade coverings.
Rotary Park: This is where most seminars will be taught and where dinner will be held. It is located 680 Millcreek Drive on the south side of the street
Camping Gear: If you choose to camp, whether on your own or with us at the group campsite, we will be able to rent camping gear from the Outdoor Recreation Center on the University of Utah campus for a very reasonable fee. There are also outdoor businesses that will rent equipment. We don’t have any gear to provide, so please consider either bringing or renting here whatever you will need to be comfortable. We will organize rentals from the Outdoor Recreation Center in the early part of the week. This time of year, lows at night are usually in the low 40’s, but can be cooler pending current weather conditions. Also, winter/spring are our wet seasons, and rain is possible. Camping in the high desert is wonderful, and spring is a fantastic time to be here. Please visit this website to view available camping rentals from the Outdoor Recreation Center:

Meals: We will provide a group cookout on Saturday night at Rotary Park with vegetarian options. Otherwise, there are many restaurants in town and good grocery stores. You will need to provide water, other meals and snacks. Coolers are available to rent from the Outdoor Recreation Center.
*Note: Utah has strict alcohol policies regarding sale of full-strength beer, liquor and wine. You must purchase these at a state liquor store, and there are a few in Salt Lake City and one in Moab. 3.2 beer is available at grocery and convenience stores.
Activities in Moab:
Moab is internationally reknown for its incredible cycling, climbing and hiking opportunities, fascinating geology and unique rock formations, ancient history, and national parks. We encourage you to enjoy these activities on Friday and Sunday, while Saturday will be packed with practical skill sessions. On Sunday we will offer a guided slickrock mountain biking trip, river trip, two guided hikes to arch formations, a wetlands hike, and two other informational seminars on Search and Rescue in Grand County and Outdoor Survival. Please join us on some excursions where we will also discuss applicable wilderness medicine issues and the natural and geologic history of the area. Please see the website for more details on the river trip.
